API 6D gate valves are typically slab-gate or through-conduit types designed for mainline Qatar pipeline isolation and pigging operations. If your Qatar project is a refinery or process plant, specify API 600. If it is a North Field gas transmission pipeline or gathering system, specify API 6D.
In a floating ball valve, the ball is held in place only by the two seat rings and is free to float slightly — fluid pressure pushes the ball against the downstream seat to achieve the seal. Floating designs are used in smaller sizes (typically up to NPS 8″) and lower pressure classes for general Qatar service. They are lower cost and suitable for instrumentation, utilities, and small-bore process connections.
In a trunnion-mounted ball valve, the ball is mechanically anchored top and bottom with separate trunnion bearings — spring-loaded seats maintain contact with the ball. This design is used for large sizes (2″ and above) and higher Qatar pipeline pressures where the fluid force on a floating ball would require excessive operating torque. Trunnion valves can also incorporate double-block-and-bleed (DBB) functionality and are standard for all Qatar North Field mainline pipeline valves.
NACE MR0175 (now ISO 15156) specifies material requirements for equipment used in oil & gas environments containing hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) — commonly called "sour service". Exposure to H₂S can cause sulphide stress cracking (SSC) and hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) in susceptible materials, leading to sudden failure even at stresses below yield strength.

Fire-safe certification (API 607 for quarter-turn valves; BS 6755 Part 2 for gate and globe valves) verifies that in the event of a fire — which can destroy polymer seats in standard ball or butterfly valves — the valve will maintain a secondary metal-to-metal seal that prevents catastrophic release of flammable or toxic fluids.
