FFP2 (EN 149) filters at least 94% of airborne particles and has a total inward leakage of ≤8%. It is suitable for protection against fine mineral dust, mists, and non-toxic aerosols — specified for Qatar grit blasting, grinding, concrete demolition, and painting operations.

FFP3 (EN 149) filters at least 99% of airborne particles and has a total inward leakage of ≤2%. FFP3 is required for protection against toxic dusts, asbestos fibres, carcinogenic aerosols, and radioactive particles. On Qatar sites, FFP3 is specified for asbestos removal, manganese welding fumes, silica dust, and some bio-aerosol exposures. Note that FFP2/FFP3 filtering face pieces are NOT suitable for H₂S, hydrocarbon vapours, or oxygen-deficient atmospheres — for those Qatar hazards, use a half-face respirator with the appropriate ABEK cartridge or SCBA.

FR (flame-retardant) clothing is workwear designed to resist ignition and self-extinguish quickly if exposed to a flash fire or heat source — limiting the burn area and severity for Qatar workers. Standard polyester or cotton clothing ignites and continues burning, causing severe burns.

FR clothing to EN ISO 11612 is mandatory on all Qatar oil & gas process areas, Ras Laffan refineries and LNG plants, North Field wellsites, and any Qatar location where there is a risk of flash fire or hydrocarbon ignition. QatarEnergy EPC contractor QHSE requirements specify FR coveralls as standard PPE for process area entry. The FR rating does not mean fireproof — it means the clothing will self-extinguish quickly when the ignition source is removed, providing critical time for the worker to escape. FR clothing must not be contaminated with hydrocarbons or solvents, which would defeat the fire protection.

H₂S (hydrogen sulphide) is present on many Qatar oil & gas sites — North Field, offshore platforms, and sour gas processing areas at Ras Laffan. The correct respiratory protection depends on H₂S concentration:

For concentrations up to approximately 100 ppm (below IDLH): a full-face respirator (EN 136) with a B-type or B2-type acid gas cartridge (specifically rated for H₂S) provides adequate protection when used within its service life limits. Always use with a personal H₂S gas detector and buddy system on Qatar sour service sites.

For concentrations above 100 ppm (IDLH) or unknown concentrations — which applies to confined space entry, process vessel entry, and any Qatar area where H₂S may accumulate: SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus to EN 137) is mandatory. FFP filtering face pieces and half-face respirators provide zero protection against H₂S — they only filter particulates, not gases. PPE inspection and replacement frequency depends on the item type and manufacturer's guidance. Key intervals for Qatar site PPE include: Hard hats — replace after any significant impact, after 3 years from first use, or as per manufacturer guidance (usually 5 years from manufacture date). Fall protection harnesses and lanyards — formal inspection by a competent person every 6 months or after any fall arrest event; discard immediately after arresting a fall. SCBA cylinders — hydrostatic test every 5 years (composite cylinders may be 3 years); visual inspection before each use. Safety boots — inspect regularly for sole wear, toe cap damage, and deterioration; replace when protection is compromised. FR clothing — inspect for contamination, burns, and washing cycle limits (most FR fabrics retain protection for 50–100 washes per manufacturer specification).
